UK LAND
In soft alluvial ground conditions bombs could have penetrated to
depths of up to 13 metres.
Approximately 10% of bombs and 50% of
incendiary devices that were dropped failed to explode.
Unexploded
munitions become more sensitive to detonation with age becoming a major risk
during intrusive engineering operations.

UK SEA
Most military
explosives do not hydrolyse but become more sensitive with age and chemical
change.
Weapons from both World Wars still lie dormant upon the seabed
waiting to fulfill their designed function - to explode, cause extensive damage
to shipping, subsea structures and kill.
Weapons migrate many miles
along the seabed in any strong tideway and when assisted by ground trawling
operations.
